Purpurea Tree Biography
The effects of the common fodder tree Bauhinia purpurea on growth and yield components of maize and millet was studied during 1997/98 and 1998/99 in the middle hill (1280 m asl) of Dhankuta, Eastern Nepal. The objective was to determine the effect of tree/crop interaction for the promotion of fodder tree plantings on the cultivated terrace Bari land. The studies were carried out under mature (18-20 years old) Tanki trees of standard size and shape selected considering different variables in the site. Recommended varieties of maize ( Zea mays ) and finger millet ( Eleusine coracana ) were planted according to farmer's practice and management condition. Observation plots were selected from the trees towards 4 directions (East, West, North, South) and 3 zones (A, B, C) up to a distance of 12m, The overall results of two year's study showed that the Tanki tree affects maize and millet crops under trees, based on distance and direction from the tree. The closer to the Tanki tree, the more severe the effect. According to the result, the direction from the tree has less effect than the distance from the tree. Some shade loving crops can be planted directly under the tree crown. In this case, the traditional Tanki/Maize-Millet cropping system can be used under conditions similar to those of mid hill Bari land.
