Orange Tree Flower

Orange Tree Flower Biography
The botanical name of a sweet orange tree is C. sinensis. It grows between 15 and 40 feet tall, and takes up an area that is about 25 feet square in the orange grove. Orange trees, like all citrus trees, are evergreens, but they are not hardy, so if the temperature falls below 24 degrees F, they may die. They have shiny green leaves and sharp thorns. When the tree is in its flowering stage, it gives off a lovely fragrance. After it starts producing fruit, an average orange tree yields 100 to 300 oranges each season.Orange trees can be started from seeds planted in the fall in rows that are 3 to 4 feet apart. It takes 21 days for the seeds to germinate. Although trees started from seeds bear more fruit than those started by budding, or grafting, budded trees mature a bit earlier and have fewer thorns. After a seedling orange tree stem grows to where its diameter is 1/2 inch, it can be grafted into a 1-year-old root stock. Because any variety of citrus can be grafted into another citrus, orange growers tend to use either a sour orange tree or a rough lemon tree as the root stock into which a sweet orange seedling is grafted. The grower cuts into the root stock bark, inserts the seedling so that the inner parts of both touch and then binds the two together so they heal as one.Planted in soil that drains easily in direct sun, orange trees grow about 1 foot per year. During the first year, leaves sprout directly from the trunk even below where the main branch starts. Younger trees look straighter and spread out evenly; older orange trees look fuller at the lower branches. Pruning keeps the tree from becoming too heavy and allows the sunlight to reach even to the middle branches. Orange trees grow best in slightly acidic soil. When enriched with nitrogen, the peel produces more oil, and when enriched with potassium, the orange tastes sweeter.
