Black Walnut Tree

Black Walnut Tree Biography
Black Walnut trees reproduce through their plump, edible nuts. A leathery shell, called a hull, encases and protects this nut. After about 12 to 15 years, Black Walnuts develop spring flowers that become walnuts by autumn. They ripen and fall to the ground in September or October each year. Walnut trees reproduce more successfully when multiple trees are present, but they are also able to self-pollinate.Adult trees grow at a rate of one to two feet in height per year. The leaves are green in the summer and turn yellow in autumn. These fragrant, compound leaves typically grow to approximately a foot with about 15 to 23 leaflets each.A mature tree reaches a height ranging from 70 to 150 feet with a spread width of 50 to 70 feet, according to Nature Hills Nursery. The diameter of a full-grown Black Walnut tree is usually between two to four feet.Black Walnut trees can live for over 100 years. They are often harvested at maturity for their dense hardwood used for firewood and various lumber products.
